Together, We Get to the Root Cause of Your Fear

We know your anxiety hurts. It drains you emotionally, and it may get worse.

Maybe you cope by clenching your teeth while standing before your audience, secretly wishing you were somewhere else, anywhere else.

Perhaps you avoid speaking at all costs. If so, you’ve become creative at this. You find ways to get others to speak in your place. You suddenly become “sick,” or you just don’t show up. Then you feel guilty.

What is this doing to your career or your business? How does this affect your confidence and your emotional well being?

After years of study and research on this phenomenon, we believe your speaking fear, presentation anxiety, stage fright, and other performance blocks result from one or more of the following issues. Usually, it’s a combination of issues.

1. Specific fears from a lack of presentation skills

These are the easiest fears to alleviate. When we help you identify and master the skills in which you are lacking, your fear disappears. Some of these fears are…

  • Lack of practice
  • Fear of a hostile crowd*
  • Fear of not looking right*
  • Lack of subject knowledge
  • Fear of speaking too long*
  • Fear of not sounding right*
  • Fear of not saying enough*
  • Fear of being misunderstood*
  • Fear of forgetting your presentation.

The fears annotated with an asterisk (*) also may be unrelated to a lack of presentation skills. They may have causes that fall into the next category.

2. Fears from issues unrelated to public speaking

This is the killer! It is also the reason why most traditional approaches to public speaking fear don’t work.

The following root causes manifest themselves as public speaking fear. They are not public speaking fear per se and should not be treated in the same way as a lack of presentation skills. These are just some of the causes that we have identified. You may have one or more of them.

  • Shyness
  • Fear of ridicule
  • Fear of rejection
  • Lack of confidence
  • Fear of a hostile crowd
  • Fear of not being heard
  • Fear of not looking right
  • Fear of offending people
  • Physical abuse as a child
  • Fear of speaking too long
  • Fear of not sounding right
  • Fear of not saying enough
  • Emotional abuse as a child
  • Fear of being embarrassed
  • Fear of being misunderstood
  • Fear of being judged by peers
  • Fear of panicking or “losing it”
  • Fear of getting a mental blank
  • Fear audience will laugh at you
  • Fear audience will not accept you
  • Fear of not getting audience approval
  • Traumatic speaking experience in your past
  • Put-down by an authority figure such as a teacher
